Every object on the page is drawn in the browser. The planets and moons wrap real surface maps made from spacecraft images. Stars, asteroids, comets, galaxies and everything else are generated from code.
Solar System Scope
Maps of Mercury, Venus, Earth (day, night, clouds and oceans), the Moon, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn and its rings, Uranus and Neptune come from Solar System Scope. They are based on NASA data and shared under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 license. The maps were resized for the web.
NASA
Maps of Phobos, Mimas, Enceladus, Charon, Titania, Triton, Europa, Io, Ganymede and Pluto come from NASA 3D Resources. NASA shares them without copyright. Parts of Io, Titania, Triton, Enceladus and Mimas were never photographed. Those areas are filled in with colours from the mapped areas around them.
